Veronica
BURZIO Ph.D. Ph.D. Associate Scientist, Fundación Ciencia
para la Vida and Millennium Institute for Fundamental and
Applied Biology.
Dr.
Veronica Burzio received graduated as aBiochemist at the Universidad
Austral de Chile in 1992, after doing her undergraduate Thesis
on the Polyphenolic Protein from Choromythilus chorus. After
working on applications for polyphenolic proteins in ELISA,
she entered the Ph.D. Science Program at the Faculty of Sciences
of the University of Chile in 1994. Her doctoral thesis, carried
out at Dr. Jorge Allende´s laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine
of the University of Chile, focused on the study of biochemical
and cellular characterization of the four splicing variants
of the Protein Kinase CK1 from zebra fish. She obtained her
Doctoral degree in Molecular, Cell Biology and Neuroscience
in April, 2003. In June, 2002, she became and Associate Scientist
at the Millennium Institute for Fundamental and Applied Biology.
RESEARCH: Dr. Burzio is currently involved in the
study of a mitochondrial 16S chimeric transcript that is found
in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of cells in active proliferation.
While normal proliferating cells express the chimeric RNA
plus an antisense counterpart, cancer cells express the antisense
molecule very poorly, which suggests that the expression of
these RNAs could serve as potential marker for development
of cancer. Additionally, Dr. Burzio is collaborating with
senior investigators of Fundación Ciencia para la Vida in
a project involving genomic studies of Alexandrium Catenella,
a Red Tide-causing micro algae.
ACADEMIC
POSITIONS: Junior Investigator at Fundación Ciencia para la Vida.
