Vivian WILHELM Ph.D. Associate Scientist, Fundación Ciencia para la Vida and Millennium Institute for Fundamental and Applied Biology.

Dr. Wilhelm begun her undergraduate studies in Biochemistry at the Faculty of Biochemistry, University of Conception. In 1990 she joined the laboratory of Dr. Jorge Allende, Department of Biochemistry, University of Chile were she accomplished work towards her doctoral thesis. Dr. Wilhelm’s area of research was the genomic structure of the gene codifying for the protein kinase CK2 and its expression during the oogenesis and embriogenesis of Xenopus laevis. In 1996 she obtained her doctoral degree in Cell and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Science, University of Chile.

RESEARCH: Dr. Vivian Wilhelm is currently collaborating with Dr. Pablo Valenzuela in the development of genetic and recombinant vaccines against the salmon pathogen P. salmonis. This obligate intracellular bacterium is the etiological agent of piscirickettsiosis, a devastating disease of maricultured salmonids in Chile. The genome of this gram negative bacteria has been recently sequenced at the Fundación Ciencia para la Vida and around 1,500 genes has been identified. Based on these sequences the group has isolated and expressed 20 genes related with virulence or host-pathogen interaction. The main goal is to test these  genes and their recombinant proteins as experimental vaccines against  P. salmonis in salmons.
